LEARN TO SWIM

Buxton Swimming Club run lessons twice per week for complete beginners from the age of 4 years upwards.  Our lessons are based on the ‘National Plan for Teaching Swimming’, set out by Swim England (formerly known as ASA).

Below you will find the outcomes for each stage and the badges your child can achieve.  BSC outcomes have been added to assist with your child’s progress.

STAGE 1

NPTS

  • Enter the water safely
  • Scoop water and wash face
  • Be showered at easy from above
  • Move Sideways for a distance of 5m
  • Perform a stretched floating position with aids/support
  • Regain an upright position from their back with aids/support
  • Regain an upright position from their front with aids/support
  • Push & Glide in horizontal position to or from a wall
  • Move Backwards for a distance of 5m
  • Move Forwards for a distance of 5m (Puffin Award)
  • Take part in a teacher led activity
  • Demonstrate the understanding of pool rules
  • Exit the water safely

BSC

  • Pick a sinker up off the bottom of the pool

BADGES

  • Puffin Award (The swimmer is able to travel 5 metres on their front and back using aids)

STAGE 2

NPTS

  • Jump in from poolside safely
  • Blow bubbles for 3 times with mouth & nose submerged
  • Regain an upright position on their back without aids/support
  • Regain an upright position on their front without aids/support
  • Perform a push & glide on their back in a torpedo position*
  • Perform a push & glide on their front in a torpedo position
  • Perform a rotation from back to front and gain an upright position
  • Perform a rotation from front to back and gain an upright position
  • Travel 5m on their back
  • Travel 5m using front

BSC

  • Submerge face completely
  • Perform a star float
  • Swim 5m on front using paddle & on back with arms by side (5m Distance Badge)

BADGES

  • Submerge face completely
  • Perform a star float

STAGE 3

NPTS

  • Jump in from poolside and submerge (min depth 0.9)
  • Sink, push & glide on their front & back maintaining streamline
  • Perform a push & glide on their back, log rolling onto their front
  • Perform a push & glide on their front, log rolling onto their back
  • Travel on their front, tuck and rotate horizontally to return on their back
  • Fully submerge to pick up an object
  • Answer 3 questions from the Water Safety Code
  • Travel 10m on the back
  • Travel 10m on the front

BSC

  • Perform a basic breast stroke leg action with feel turned out.
  • Jump in at 3.0m
  • Perform a mushroom float.
  • Perform a handstand and forward roll* (Extra outcome but does not need to fully complete)

BADGES

  • 10m Distance
  • 15m Distance
  • (The swimmer must perform front stroke with face in and arms coming over and back stroke with arm coming over the water).

STAGE 4

NPTS

  • Show an understanding of ‘buoyancy’
  • Perform tuck float for 5 seconds
  • Perform a sequence of 3 shapes whilst floating on the water
  • surface
  • Swim through a hoop and retrieve a sinker
  • Kick 10m Backstroke in a torpedo shape
  • Kick 10m Front crawl in a torpedo shape
  • Kick 5m Butterfly on the front or on the back
  • Kick 5m Breast stroke on the front
  • Kick 5m Breast stroke on the back
  • Travel on the front & rotate onto the back in one continuous
  • movement
  • Travel on the back & rotate onto the front in one continuous

  • Swim 10m choice of stroke.

BSC

  • Swim 20m on their front
  • Collect at abject from 1.8m using a head first surface dive.

BADGES

  • 25m Distance (The swimmer must perform front stroke with face in and arms coming over and back stroke with arm coming over the water)
  • 50m Distance (Performed as 25m front/25m back)
